Yesterday, artists and the local community around North Kensington gathered on Portobello Road for the launch of the anti-graffiti art panel. 听

Morley x Portobello Road

The project is a collaboration between Art and Design students and staff at North Kensington, which involves the creation of a striking 8x4ft panel.

This innovative project is designed not only to beautify the area but also to serve as an effective anti-graffiti measure.

The event was a celebration of local art and community spirit, reflecting Morley鈥檚 mission to foster progressive learning and positive change.

Collaborative Art Project with North Kensington

The panel showcases high-resolution artwork that captures the creativity and diversity of the Morley North Kensington community.

The artwork is accompanied by descriptive text and features the 澳门图库资料 London logo, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to community engagement and artistic expression.

A Symbol of Diversity and Community

At the heart of this project is the 鈥楳NK Student,鈥 a figure created through the combined efforts of students from various disciplines, including Jewellery, Interior Design, Ceramics and Glass.

This amorphous figure is more than just a piece of art; it is a visual representation of the rich diversity and unique stories of the students at MNK.

“This piece of art is a symbol of creativity and collaboration at our North Kensington Centre. Our amorphous student is an ode to all that choose to study here, and the myriad of reasons why they choose to do so. Everyone is welcome, and everyone is celebrated” said Luke Lount, Programme Manager for Music and Creative Arts.

Morley鈥檚 vision

Morley鈥檚 NK Centre has always been a cornerstone of the local community, drawing inspiration from its dynamic and diverse surroundings.

The creation of the MNK Student figure encapsulates the college鈥檚 vision to provide inclusive and progressive learning opportunities that foster personal and community growth.

As the panel is unveiled, it will stand as a lasting symbol of Morley’s dedication to supporting the arts and promoting a vibrant, cohesive community.

This panel is the face of our very own Artists of Morley season – watch out for more news to come in early June.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on mental health issues, reducing stigma, and promoting wellbeing for all.

At Morley, we are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where mental health is prioritised and celebrated.

Breaking down barriers

Mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall wellbeing, affecting how we think, feel and act. It influences how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices.

This month, we have organised a series of special events and activities designed to engage our community, raise awareness, and support mental health initiatives.

By raising awareness and promoting mental health education, we can help break down the barriers that prevent people from seeking the support they need. Our events this month aim to create a safe space for discussions about mental health, encourage positive practices, and provide opportunities for creative expression.

Playing for mental health

Earlier this month, our very own musicians from the Advanced Chamber Music class provided the opening act for a mental health awareness series at Guy’s Hospital.

– an innovative organisation dedicated to transforming healthcare and improving patient outcomes through the integration of creative arts into health and wellbeing practices – is hosting a programme which involves lunchtime performances at the hospital for patients, families and staff to enjoy.

The musicians played an array of their favourite music which attracted the crowd. The atmosphere was uplifting as they played their instruments including piano, flute and clarinet.

“Breathe Arts Health Research have been bringing music and other performing arts into Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals for over 10 years. Our weekly Lunchtime Performances take place in public areas of the hospitals, encouraging staff, patients and visitors to take a moment out of their day to pause and recharge. We were really pleased to welcome wonderful musicians from Morley to begin a month of activity for Mental Health Awareness Month this May.” Said Becky Harrison, Engagement & Support Officer, Guy’s and St Thomas’, Breathe Arts Health Research.

HND Photography Collaborative Project: Wellbeing in Focus

Our HND Photography students are working on an inspiring collaborative project under the theme of Wellbeing. They have chosen to support the Mental Health Foundation, an organisation dedicated to ensuring everyone has access to good mental health assistance.

Event Details:

  • Date: Wednesday 22 May & Thursday 23 May听
  • Location: Photographic Studio, Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries
  • Participation: Individuals are invited to have their portrait taken. Participants should bring a cherished possession that contributes to their wellbeing.听

As part of the project, each participant will receive a portrait and a diptych featuring their portrait alongside their cherished possession. These photographs will be showcased in a slideshow presentation at the end of year show.

A suggested donation of 拢5.00 will be sent to the Mental Health Foundation charity. This initiative not only highlights the importance of mental wellbeing but also supports a meaningful cause.

澳门图库资料 London has today announced the return of its Morley Prize for Unpublished Writers of Colour, offering unpublished writers of colour opportunities to work with agents and publishers, as well as a cash prize.

Prize co-founder and judge Nelle Andrew said: 鈥淭he illustrious, wise and supremely talented Toni Morrison once wrote: ‘If you are free then you need to free somebody else. If you have power then it is your job to empower somebody else.’

“As a Literary Agent who is also a woman of colour, one of the most exciting parts my job is to find exciting new talent, empower arresting new voices and advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.

“I have had the privilege to work with many people from across many backgrounds in my career, and now with the help of 澳门图库资料 London, this is the latest initiative in which I hope to achieve that ambition Toni Morrison advocated so many years ago.”

Former winners

2023 fiction prize winner Joseph Diwaker
2023 winner Joseph Diwaker

2023’s fiction prize was won by Joseph Diwaker, an Asian-British writer based in Buckinghamshire. His entry I SHALL NOT WANT was cited as “a heartbreaking work centred around the character of James, who is tormented by his sexuality and its perceived conflict with his Christian faith.” Click here to read about the 2023 prize.

In 2022 the winner was Hanna Thomas Uose, a British Japanese writer based in London and Norwich. Uose submitted a draft of her debut novel, WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER. whose manuscript describes 鈥渁 new drug that halts the ageing process and extends the human lifespan, at a hefty price. Five characters, variously based in London, Tokyo, and San Francisco, must make a choice regarding the drug and face the consequences of their decisions over the ensuing twenty years; their lives intersect as careers are forged and relationships broken.鈥 Click here to read about the 2022 prize.

The inaugural winner in 2021 was Kate Cheka, a听Black mixed-race British Tanzanian woman, whose entry SAME DUST was begun while studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, and is an exercise in a dream-like moral debate, imagining what would it mean if we explored retribution for gender-based violence, and what does it in the end mean if we accept the definitions and categories of our oppressor. Makers of Morley in the spotlight this May

A maker is someone who creates. Someone who’s curious, who wants to learn more. Someone who’s good with their hands, and interested in combining mediums in new and inventive ways.

And there are many makers at Morley鈥

So we’ve decided to spend the month of May – which includes London Craft Week too – celebrating the Makers of Morley.

Read on to discover how鈥

A journey through creativity

With the flagship commanding attention at the (with to follow later in the month), the excitement extends far beyond, with exhibitions taking place across the college, including in the Waterloo Centre鈥檚 Barry Till, Cardew and Foyer galleries, and at our North Kensington and Chelsea Centres too.

Visit the Stained Glass exhibition in the foyer of the Waterloo Centre, view items of sculpture and hand-crafted design in the new Chelsea Centre ‘hub’ space, or visit North Kensington for the first in a series of collaborations with artists local to the community around Portobello and Golborne Roads.

Morley x Brown Baby

Morley has joined forces with local art collective , setting the stage for a collaboration that promises to redefine artistic boundaries.

Together, they’ll unveil a showcase at the North Kensington Centre for Skills taking place on Fridays and Saturdays from 17 May until 1 June, emphasising the community spirit that is such a part of our North Kensington ethos.

The exhibition will be co-curated by Toby Laurent Belson and Ron Best, two local artists with decades of experience between them of exhibitions and teaching in the local area.

Inspiring individuals

The Makers of Morley will also shine a light on examples of creative excellence from amongst the student and tutor community.

An early example comes from the Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries in the shape of millinery students Kate McGinlay, Julia Lewis and Roberta Cucuzza, who have each been recognised in the recent Feltmakers Design Awards 2024.

The competition, open to millinery enthusiasts worldwide, emphasises innovation and craftsmanship, with entrants encouraged to explore diverse techniques and styles.

With Kate securing 2nd place, Julia claiming 3rd, and Roberta honoured for Innovative Use of Felt – not to mention commendations for two fellow students – there’s plenty of evidence that the college’s Millinery courses are in rude health.

鈥淭o be validated by leading people in the industry in this way has given me such a boost – I finally feel confident that my decision to follow this career path was the right one,鈥 said Kate McGinlay.

Makers of Morley: a handy guide

Our new Makers of Morley brochure is now available – both online here and in print across all our centres.

It features exhibitions and activities that are being showcased this year including , Familiar; Unfamiliar, , an explainer about Waterloo鈥檚 new Fifth Plinth sculpture, and a podcast by Morley Radio to name a few.

The X of Morley

What are the 鈥淴 factors鈥 that define life at 澳门图库资料 London? The X of Morley is a campaign that鈥檚 on a mission to find out鈥t鈥檒l shine a light on the uniqueness that is 澳门图库资料 London.

From “Artists” to “Performers” and now “Makers” too, keep an eye out over the coming months as we shine the spotlight on all that’s great about Morley.

The Makers of Morley runs until the end of May 2024.

The months-long relaunch of Morley’s Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries – following a 拢3m refurbishment over summer 2023 – came to a crescendo as hundreds of potential students visited the site this weekend.

Following a stakeholder event at the beginning of 2024, the Creative Industries Open Day was an opportunity for potential students to experience the variety and vibrancy of the refurbished centre.

Something for everyone

The Open Day showcased Morley’s commitment to nurturing talent across various fields, from arts and creative ventures to business, fashion, Esports, and photography.

Visitors had the opportunity to explore the newly-refurbished Chelsea Centre via a series of guided tours, offering an immersive and interactive experience, and allowing guests to explore cutting-edge resources such as Esports suites, fashion workshops, and photography labs, among others.

Throughout the day, guests were introduced to a curriculum designed to cater to diverse interests and ambitions, regardless of age or educational background.

Event highlights

The day was filled with enriching activities, including workshops, guided tours, and in-depth talks on various courses.

鈥淭his was my first time attending an Open Day 鈥 and it was great seeing the different areas of the College working together to promote Morley, showcasing why prospective students should consider studying with us,” said Katherine Cleator, Policy and Governance Officer.

“My highlight of the day was interacting with a family, where the teen was supportive of their parents enrolling on short courses鈥 provided it was at a different Centre to them!鈥

Attendees had a chance to connect with current students too, gaining valuable insights into their experiences and the opportunities awaiting them at Morley.

Tutors hosted workshops such as printmaking onto tote bags and badgemaking. This gave future students a taste of what the centre has to offer and gave them the opportunity to explore new activities.

Interim Centre Principal Maggie Hall said: 鈥淭he open day event on the 27th was all about understanding aspects of the creative industries, the pathways and the dynamic and exciting careers that exist within it.

“The day was fun and packed with activity: we had specialist talks from our lecturers, tours to showcase the new spaces following our big centre refurbishment, exhibitions, activities and workshops for everyone to get involved in. I would like to pass on my massive thanks to all those who worked together and made this event possible.鈥

Securing your spot for future success

As the curtains close on this year’s Creative Industries Open Day, the journey towards a future filled with endless possibilities continues. Prospective students are encouraged to secure their spots at Morley by registering for upcoming events and embracing the opportunity to shape their creative future.

The success of Morley’s Creative Industries Open Day serves as a testament to Morley’s dedication to fostering talent, innovation and creativity within its vibrant community.

Morley would like to thank all who attended and hope to see you at future events.

Morley’s North Kensington Centre for Skills is excited to debut its vibrant Music programme this year, joining a proud Morley musical tradition that dates back to Gustav Holst’s tenure as Director of Music and before.听

Embracing the beat of the city, new classes resonate with innovation and opportunity, offering a platform for students to explore, create, and thrive in the dynamic world of music.

These courses include Pearson BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Music Industry Skills and BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance or Production where students can dive into the world of music.

Luke Lount 鈥 Programme Area Manager for Music in North Kensington 鈥 gave us insights into the programme, the facilities and future opportunities in W10.

Q: What sets apart the music education experience at the North Kensington Centre for Skills from other institutions?

Luke: We offer our students specialist tuition in brand new, custom-built facilities with a tailored approach to learning. Due to our smaller class sizes, we can offer a more customised experience to our learners, offering them a range of internal and external opportunities to help them pursue their goals.

Q: What types of facilities and resources are available?

Luke: Students have access to first class facilities at NK. Our custom-built recording studio is industry-standard and features three independent live rooms that can be connected to allow for the live capture of a diverse range of performances. The Mac production and composition studio is designed to be a working space for artists and producers, offering new equipment and a station per student. Finally, the rehearsal rooms are a specially designed workspace suitable for performance and live sound. Students at NK also have access to Morley Radio’s studios as well as the brand new Main Hall for performances.

Q: Could you elaborate on any special initiatives that are integrated into the curriculum?

Luke: NK offers a variety of special programmes, workshops, and masterclasses to enrich students’ learning experiences. These include coveted work placements at renowned studios like and , backstage access at and the , mentorship through Creative Networks, and exposure to industry-active lecturers.

Q: How does collaboration play a role in the music programme at NK?

Luke: Collaboration is central to NK’s music programme, fostering interdisciplinary engagement and practical learning. Production students work closely with performers, recording and mixing compositions, while performers create music for producers. Furthermore, students are encouraged to collaborate across different subject areas, exploring the multifaceted nature of music.

Q: What career pathways can graduates of the music programme expect?

Luke: While it’s early to predict specific career pathways, graduates of NK’s music programme are equipped with practical skills and industry insights, priming them for diverse careers in performance, production, composition, and beyond. Their education and experiential learning pave the way for a harmonious future in the realm of music.

Student experiences within the programme

Malachi and Ramon are two students who are currently enrolled in the music programme at NK. They both spoke about their experience in the course, what caught their eye and advice for future students.

What drew you to the course?

Malachi: 鈥淚 have had a passion for music for a long time. It is around my family who have been involved in music for a long time. My dad, brother and uncle are all musicians. I guess it is the history of my family making music that made me want to start making music.鈥

Ramon: 鈥淚 have always wanted to do something within music. When I was younger I participated in a lot of different musical activities, although I never took it further. London is a city where there are lots of creative activities and I just wanted to go for it.鈥

What is your favourite part of the course?

Malachi: 鈥淚 am a producer and love beat making. I love creating my own beat with drums, bass and experimenting with different genres.鈥

Ramon: 鈥淭he studio and the sound engineering. All of the desk, how the tech side of things works. It is great to have these professional faculties to use throughout the programme.鈥

Any advice for further students?

Malachi: 鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to try all different aspects of music. Try not to narrow yourself down to one thing; there is so much out there and you never know what you might end up loving. You don鈥檛 have to be the biggest artist, there are so many different types of roles.鈥

Ramon: 鈥淒o your research on a programme. You don鈥檛 need to know exactly what you want to do but it is always good to shop around for a programme that suits you.鈥
